Cameroon’s financial system is the largest in the CEMAC region. Bank loans to SMEs still remains low, (15 percent of total outstanding loans). The banking sector is highly concentrated and dominated by foreign commercial banks. 6 out of the 11 largest commercial banks are foreign-owned, and the three largest banks hold more than 50 percent of total financial system assets.
The Information and Communication Technologies sector is fast-changing due to the 1999 liberalization. The Cameroon government has granted two licences to private operators, namely ORANGE and MTN to operate the mobile
telephone; while the land line telephone is still monopolized by CAMTEL, the public operator.
